A series of fascinating photographs from one of the pioneering women in the photographs show New York in a state of change in the 1930s years.
Photographer Berenice Abbott proposed the “New York Change”, its great project, to document it in the Federal Art Project (FAP) in 1935. The FAP was a Depression-era government program for artists and unemployed workers in areas of similar to advertising, graphic design, illustration, photography and publication.
Instead of focusing on iconic images, Abbott captured the skirts, shops, travelers, and inner city areas of the big city.
Its purpose was to photograph New York’s urban material, culture and environment, documenting the old before being destroyed and registering new constructions.
