Problems With Your Car Stereo? Here Are 3 Troubleshooting Tips
Your car stereo is something that adds a great deal of enjoyment to drive. Sure, a car that hugs the corners is going to be fun to drive. Yet, if you can’t listen to your favorite tunes on a set of high-end car speakers, then you’re missing out. When you start having problems with your car speakers then it can be annoying. Even dangerous if you are trying to adjust the stereo instead of driving. Whether you are using aftermarket speakers or ones that came from the factory, you can end up having problems. In either case, it can be expensive to send out to be fixed. Unless you do it yourself. In this article, we will go over several troubleshooting tips to help you identify the problem and possibly help you fix it yourself.
1 – Sounds cuts out
If you are listening to a song and it cuts out in the middle and then picks up later on in the song then it is likely that you have a problem with the wiring. This is because if it were the stereo itself it would pause the song and pick up where it left off. When it cuts out, the song is still playing; essentially it’s just that the wires are not bringing the sound to the speakers. It’s most likely a loose wire that is not connected properly to the speakers or to the harness that has disconnected the stereo from the speakers. If you are able to see where the wires connect to the speaker or to the stereo itself then fiddle with them to see if they are loose.
2 – Check for shorts
If you’ve checked the wires and the connection is tight then the problem lies in the wires somewhere else. Along the way from the stereo to the speakers, there may be a short somewhere. You’ll have to inspect the entire wire to see if there is a spot where the wire is broken somewhere or corroded. These will cause shorts in the wire itself and will need to be replaced. You’ll also need to understand how the wire got that way. If it was rubbing against something then it will happen again when the wire is replaced. Make sure the wires are not getting rubbed away from abrasion for the replacement.
3 – Speaker is loose
If the sound is really off from the speakers and vibrations are making it difficult to listen to then it is probably being caused by a loose speaker. This is causing the sound to vibrate and make that annoying noise. Check to make sure that the speaker is installed tightly. It could be a matter of the screws being loose. If it is still tight then the speaker is likely resting against something that doesn’t absorb the sound. You can get some pieces of foam to put underneath the speaker or wherever it is that is touching and that will stop the vibrations.
