Wi-Fi 6

Everything you need to know about the new generation Wi-Fi 6

Galaxy S10, Note 10 and iPhone 11 have Wi-Fi 6 built-in

Wi-Fi 6 is the next generation of wireless technology faster than 802.11ac. More than speed, it will deliver higher performance in densely populated areas from stadiums to your intelligent home full of equipment.

[td_block_ad_box spot_id=”custom_ad_2″]

Technology certification took place on September 16, 2019 and many hardware are arriving and some of them have made their debut. The iPhone 11 comes with Wi-Fi 6 technology.

Wi-Fi has version numbers

Here are the Wi-Fi versions still in use:

  • Wi-Fi 4 is 802.11n launched in 2009
  • Wi-Fi 5 is 802.11ac launched in 2014
  • Wi-Fi 6 is 802.11ax launched in 2019

The Wi-Fi Alliance said these numbers will appear in the software so you can easily tell what technology you’re using as you connect to your smartphone, tablet and laptop over a Wi-Fi network.

The non-widely used Wi-Fi versions are as follows:

  • Wi-Fi 1 is 802.11b launched in 1999
  • Wi-Fi 2 is 802.11a launched in 1999
  • Wi-Fi 3 is 802.11g launched in 2003

A faster Wi-Fi

As usual the latest Wi-Fi standards have higher transfer rates. If you use a Wi-Fi router with a single device connected the maximum speed of Wi-Fi 6 should be 40% higher than Wi-Fi 5.

This reaches Wi-Fi 6 speed through more efficient data encoding. Simply put, more information packets are set to the same wavelet size. The chips that encode and decode these signals are becoming more powerful and processing more data.

The standard Wi-Fi 6 also speeds up on 2.4Ghz networks, while the industry is going from 5Ghz Wi-Fi for less interference, 2.4Ghz is better at penetrating walls and objects.

Higher battery life

A new “target wake time” (TWT) feature means that your smartphone, laptop and other Wi-Fi devices will have higher battery life.

When an access point communicates with a device like your smartphone, it will tell you when to set Wi-Fi to sleep and when to wake it up for future data transfer. This will save energy and Wi-Fi spend more time sleeping.

Higher performance in populated areas

A Wi-Fi network will be loaded if you are in an area with a high number of devices. You can imagine a stadium, airport, hotel or market. So you will most likely have slow Wi-Fi internet.

Wi-Fi 6 incorporates new technologies that will help in such situations. Intel says Wi-Fi will increase the average speed of each user by 4 times even in populated areas.

How Wi-Fi 6 fights overload

You may not necessarily want to know the details but that’s how it works. Wi-Fi 6 can already divide wireless channels into a high number of “sub-channels.” Each of these sub-channels will send data destined for another device. Simply put, the Wi-Fi device can communicate with more devices at the same time through a technology called Orthogonal Frequeny Division Multiple Access or OFDMA.

The new standard also has an improved MIMO system. On Wi-Fi 5 MIMO could communicate with several devices at once while with Wi-Fi 6 these devices could all respond at once.

When will you get Wi-Fi 6?

Some routers and devices have begun to appear. The Galaxy S10, Note 10 and iPhone 11 have Wi-Fi 6 built-in. The TP-Link Deco mesh network also introduced the first Wi-Fi 6 routers last year. Linksys Velop are the company’s first Wi-Fi 6 or Netgear Nighthawk AX4 routers but costly.

Nvidia GeForce Now

With Nvidia GeForce Now, you simply rent a computer to play

After a long beta phase, Nvidia officially launched its new cloud gaming service: GeForce Now.

Unlike Google Stadia, GeForce Now does not aim to build a console experience. Rather Nvidia connects to your Steam, Epic or Battle.net account in order to play games purchased on these platforms. More like Shadow.

[td_block_ad_box spot_id=”custom_ad_2″]

But GeForce is not free. Customers actually getting this service is just like renting a computer. Currently the service costs $5 but the company plans to raise the price. You can try the service by creating a free account that lasts only 1 hour and has less powerful hardware.

But GeForce Now is not available anywhere in the world as you have to be near the data center to reduce transmission delays. The company currently has 9 data centers in the US, five in Europe, one in Korea and two in Japan.

Nvidia is also in the process of enriching its game list so it may be that you have a game purchased on Steam but you can’t play it until Nvidia supports it.

AMD 3990X Threadripper CPU

AMD’s 3990X Threadripper ‘Monster’ Processor is coming and Intel has not an answer

AMD’s 64-core Threadripper 3990X arrives in 2020 and costs $3,990

When AMD said that the 64-core Threadripper 3990X processor would be available in 2020, the company did not intend to let enthusiasts wait.

[td_block_ad_box spot_id=”custom_ad_2″]

The processor which costs $3,990 will go on sale from February 7th. It is intended for computers and jobs where more cores means saving time and money.

The company says that 3990X is the fastest processor in the world and uses the results of the Cinebench R20 as evidence. It’s several times faster than the Core i9-9900KS according to AMD testing.

But the truth is more complicated than that. While there is no dizzying frequency limited to just 2.9Ghz base and 4.3Ghz turbo, the Threadripper will be a champion due to the high number of cores.

And if an app can’t use all those cores, most likely the 3990X will lag behind. However, this suggests that Intel is suffering from AMD’s pace in very important segments such as workstation performance. That’s because Intel fails to properly produce denser 14-nanometer processors, and Threadripper is a more affordable option compared to Xeon for some professionals.

AMD Ryzen 4000 CPUs

Intel has no chance against the new AMD’s 7nm Ryzen 4000-series CPUs for laptops

The first wave of laptops with Ryzen 4000 processors will be released in the first quarter of 2020 with AMD promising to integrate more than 100 systems in 2020.

In recent years AMD has been making a fuss with the PC market especially in the a.k.a workstations PC segment.

[td_block_ad_box spot_id=”custom_ad_2″]

But in laptops it is still far off especially with the powerful and super portable systems where Intel dominates. This year the company wants to change that with the Ryzen 4000, a line of processors that combines the Zen 2 Core with the 7-nanometer architecture.

The result is probably one of the most intriguing processors we’ve ever seen. The more powerful Ryzen 7 4800U, an eight-core and 16-threads processor can be easily integrated into a super portable laptop.

On the other hand is Intel with the Core i7-10710U processor which has only six cores. AMD’s 4800U model has a frequency of between 1.8 GHz base and 4.8 GHz turbo as well as eight Radeon graphics cores.

It’s 90% faster than Intel’s Core i7-1065G7 chip in Cinebench testing and 28% faster in 3Dmark TimeSpy.

You might say this comparison is not valid because the Comet Lake six-core chip is more powerful than the four-core one. But the six-core model is old with slower integrated graphics and has no chance against the Radeon graphics cores.

Not surprisingly, AMD says the 4800U overshadows the Core i7-1065G7 in terms of gaming. In the Rocket League AMD processor has 30fps more at 1080p resolution. Intel has taken steps forward with Iris graphics but can’t compare to AMD Radeon.

Even if we don’t go with the best of AMD, you also get eight cores with 4700U but no hyperthreading. For more performance AMD introduced the Ryzen 4000H in 45W profile. This chip will appear on gaming laptops like the Dell G5 15, Asus Zephyrus G14.

AMD claims the 4800H is 39% faster than the Core i7-9750H. It even overtakes the Core i7-9700K desktop chip.

ROG Swift 360

Nvidia unveils its first 360Hz 1080p G-Sync monitor: ROG Swift 360

The first 360Hz monitor was unveiled during CES

Nvidia unveiled yesterday the world’s fastest gaming and esports monitor, the ASUS ROG Swift 360Hz. This monitor is 24.5 inches in size and supports a resolution of 1080p to 360Hz, exceeding the current standard of 240Hz.

[td_block_ad_box spot_id=”custom_ad_2″]

The monitor uses Nvidia’s G-Sync technology to deliver the best PC experience, which means players must have the best Nvidia GPUs to use it to its full potential. It’s not clear how this monitor works with AMD GPUs, so they’ll have to wait a bit longer for more information. Meanwhile, GeForce RTX users can immediately use the advanced features of this monitor.

Along with the monitor and trailer above, Nvidia also released statistics from their research last year. The company found that flick shots in Overwatch improved by 37% from a 360Hz monitor to 60Hz, beating 240Hz by 4%.

Some of the games that support this monitor are Rainbow Six: Siege, Fortnite, Overwatch and CS: GO. To show players the possibilities offered by a 360Hz monitor, Nvidia created a test in CS: GO where players have to eliminate as many opponents in 45 seconds, constantly rotating to find opponents. The company plans to bring a demo this week to CES, where the ROG Swift 360Hz will debut.

Nvidia has not yet released details on the launch date and pricing of the monitor, but it is rumored that it will come in 2020. ASUS monitor will certainly not be for the faint-hearted, seeing similar monitors 24 inch 240Hz go for around $400- $500, but for competitive players this is definitely a worthwhile investment.
